Ok Ladies and Gentlemen

Earlier this evening I took it upon myself to calculate to the nearest Kilometer what my fuel ecomomy is whilst driving my 2.2L Zafira... And the results were actually pleasantly surprising.

The process today was as follows:

1. 05:45Hrs. Notice Odometer sitting at 77'999kms just before leaving Leura, for a 90-minute commuting Run to Sutherland.
ie Odometer clicks 78'000kms upon entering Great Western Highway On-Ramp.

2. 16:30Hrs @ United Servo, Faulconbridge. Fill tank to brim with exactly 17.44L of 98-RON Fuel. Odometer sitting @ 78'206kms.

3. ie Distance travelled from Leura-Sutherland-Faulconbridge via M4, M7, M5, Heathcote Road and vice-versa is 206kms.

4. Add another 26kms from Faulconbridge-Leura via Great western Highway.

5. Total Distance travelled between last fill-up @ Faulconbridge yeaterday 18th April and Leura this evening: 258kms.

That equates to just under 15kms/Litre of Petrol. http://www.opelaus.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif

Granted, the Zafira does nearly all highway/freeway work. And undoubtably, the economy would suffer if I were stuck in CBD traffic.

But at 14.79kms/Litre, (6.76L/100kms) that's as good as anything the Barina could offer.

I suspect that if I were to drive more smoothly in conjunction with the cruise control, that economy may well rise to as much as 18kms/litre.

What's your best fuel economy?

my best fuel economy is 4.1l per 100km(while cruising at 100kph). maintained for at least 5 minutes while i looked and then got bored :)

How did you get 4.1 ? Is that coasting ?

no, coasting would be 0 :)

its not a stock tune, its tuned perfectly on a dyno. It averages about 4.8-5.1l per 100km on the freeway normally, just managed to get this low figure one night..maybe had a tailwind or something.

2 weeks ago, did 832km on my tank in the cali, still had 2.1l in the tank when i filled up again.

thats 832/57.9

14.36km/l
i dont think that is too shabby?

in SA i did a trip for work from Cape Town to Upington (880kms) at an average speed of around 200kmh with sound and my team of 4 plus their luggage. In my Astra F 2l 8v

did 1780km on +- 130l of fuel
13.69km/l

My corsa B 1.6i did Cape Town to Port Elizabeth and back on 92l (1520km)
16.52km/l

For a tank, 4.6 L/100 km - Mostly at 100 km / h
Best I every did on a single trip (both directions) was 4.1 L / 100 km - Mostly at 80 to 90 km / h

Normal average is more like 5.2 to 5.6 l/100 km. The Blue Mountains will do that to your consumption. I get high 4's low 5's at freeway speeds.

I only every see over 6 l/100 km if I drive like a maniac. Or my wife drives it !

CDTi 1.9 Diesel.

Cheers,

Mintaka.

15.9km per L = 6.28L per 100km

would be even better is Reid Hwy didnt have stuid traffic lights

i am not that kind though and i will tell: how's 6,200km (brand new car), average speed 45km/h, driven with no economy in mind in Adelaide Metro only, @ 6.4 l/100km?

Aint that the truth ;)

(mines not the CDTi though - just a lowly 'low pressure' Diesel (lower then the normal DTi) .......bloomin Vauxhall people......

My best in the Astra was 680km to 46l = 6.7l/100km, that was one tank on the way to adelaide!!! That total trip was around 7l/100km, and most was spent revving quite high and with a heavy carload, so i was impressed!!!

Well thats all out the window when i pick up my Gen III next week lol!!!!

Best I got in the Vectra was an "indicated" average (ie on the Trip computer) of 5.8L/100km when I was commuting between Cowes and Inverloch for a few weeks - when I would fill up, the DTE would say something like 870km sometimes!!

Best I have got from memory was 6.4L- Once on a ********* cruise (where I wasn't exactly conserving fuel... must've been the long drive to the meet), and once on a trip to Melbourne (included about an hour or so inching through traffic- new road was opening up so traffic mayhem!)

Best?

dunno really.
I know my average is currently at 8.6L/100km's, with a total of 16500Km's travelled, and average speed of 33km/h (so u can see by that low average speed it aint a freeway bunny). I live in the inner city suburbs, work in inner city suburbs, and travel thru the city daily (work's on the otehr side of teh city)
All this from a petrol powered 1.8L Astra H wagon, running on 225/40/18 stickies.

Same commuting, STi, 12.5L/100km's
Same commuting, 1975 124 CC sport twin weber sidedraughts, 13L/100km's..(this one has been set up for open road cruising, not city commuting, hence teh consumption)

Most comfortable? Astra
Most powerful and easiest to deal with fellow commuters? STi.. but u hav eto master teh clutch for traffic use (it is asoft pedal, but not a soft clutch..bugger up the transition, and u either bunnyhop/jarr or slingshot)
Most rewarding... 124 especially aurally

Oh, we got over 700 Km's out of the wife's 'vert on a round trip to lakes entrance (melb-lakes entrance). i think it was around 6.8 (or was it 7.2?) L/100Km's. Not bad considering it was the time when vic had it's bushfires, and we had teh roof down whenever we could deal with the smoke.

I used to religiously keep fuel figures for all my cars in the early days, and it was easy because the old standard was Miles per gallon. Easy. divide the miles by the gallons.
Now the standard is litres per 100 kilometres, the calculation is a little more difficult.
The easiest way to accurately calculate is from full tank to full tank.
Fill the tank. Write down the Odo reading. Drive. Fill the tank. write down the Odo reading. Do the math.

We recently drove to Rockhampton in the Astra. We made it on one full tank.
Distance - 715 Km. Fuel - 51.31 Litres. Divide 51.31 by 7.15. Hence 7.18 Litres per 100 Km. The math conversion back to Miles per gallon comes in at 39.38 Miles per gallon.

Now. Take me back to 1969 just after I bought that first new Corolla, and I was in the Air Force. I could fill up at the servo on the base and pay a Military subsidsed 29 Cents per gallon for Super, and that works out at 6.4 Cents per litre. No wonder we pine for those 'good old days, eh!

Tony.

It's more a case of where you live and what the standard measurement is in that particular place. Australia has been L/100km as a standard for a long time now and what most people are used to here.

Best fuel economy in the lancer was 525kms to 37L... before all the engine crap... LOL it was sitting on empty for ages I was just waiting for the light to come on, but pulled into a servo for fear of the car stopping (it was a lancer after all), but only filled up 37L... that was with very conservative driving (double demerits, P plates) and long freeway stuff... the lancer started dying after that point and it never saw teh 500km per tank ever again... I was lucky to get 350km to a 45L tank... (thank god its gone)

The best in the astra has been so far 633km to 47L that was with a full car, a passenger of over 100kgs, and air cond most of the time. And I wasn't driving it slow either... love country roads... especially the sweepign bends outta orange ... :D
