Hi Everyone,

New to this forum, hope someone may be able to help.

My daughter's 1997 SB Swing Barina has a speedo that occaisionally goes to zero for a few minutes and then resumes operation. We have done all the usual things like remaking connectors etc, and a replacement speedo unit (not a whole cluster) was fitted, so I don't think it's that.

The engine computer and body control module did not provide any fault codes when checked at a Holden dealer, so they are no more help. Has anyone seen this before? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Is there a specialist in the western Sydney region that someone knows who could help?

I realise this is really a performance forum, but some of you techies may have seen this before. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

hey guys my girlfriend has a similar problem with the zero speed till about 60km/hr or hits a bump in road and hers also bounces/flickers. hers is 2000 olympic edn swing 1.4l. holden wants to just replace instrument cluster but will not say for sure if it will fix it.

good luck if u find any thing i would be happy to hear what the problem was.

i was thinking voltage regulator for the flickering but then it started the no speed thing.

I had this issue with my 03 SRi. Instrument cluster was replaced under warranty and that solved the problem. Very expensive part for an SRi ....

gf's C12NZ 97 city, had the same issue, battery was rooted, replaced it, no issue since.
not sure it was the cause, but seemed to fix the problem ;).

Thanks for all your help so far.

I'm thinking about buying the Haynes workshop manual to show me where the component parts are, is this the best/only one to get?

I'm told the signal for the speedo goes through the engine mamangement computer and the body control module, and possibly the immobiliser as well before it gets to the cluster.

Take the cluster out first, will take no longer than 5 minutes. Clean all the plugs and make sure its all connecting first, then take it further.

just because the cars are not rockets doesnt mean it's not a performance forum.
