View Full Version : OpelAus National Meeting 2005

Glenn and I have decided to start a fresh post in regards to this topic.
As most of you know (if you dont, check out this post (http://opelaus.com/phpBB2-3/viewtopic.php?t=501)), Glenn came up with the idea of having a National OpelAus Meet sometime in 2005. This would be a first for OpelAus, where members from each state of Australia can finally meet in one location and pretty much have fun.
However, before either of us can start ringing around to enquire about places where we can stay for a few nights or a week, we need to get approximate numbers of who here would be interested in such a thing.
As you can see, this is a BIG event to organise, so as always, any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also feel free to ask any question that you may have.

Thanks heaps

Glenn (KID_SRi)

Also, It would be better on a Long Weekend.
But in Saying that, Some States have Public Holidays that others don't.
So We'd Like to Know:
What Long Weekend would Suit Most People?
A More Definate Location? Canberra or The Snowy Mountains or Other(New Ideas)
Your Feed Back is Needed :D

can we get one with a drag strip or atleast a place with atleast 400m of road

If we do that.
Then It will blow into a Huge $$$ Thing.
To use a Drag strip theres a Few things that would have to be Covered:
Paying a ANDRA or CAMS Scrutineer to Check Car Safety.
Marshalls in case of Accidents
Fire and Ambulance Services

I would love to see a OpelAus Drag Meeting, But it would have to be in the Future.

i was thinkin 400m of any road as long its straight and white spray paint to mark the start and finish line and 2 hot chicks with flags to at the start line....

 too much too fast and too furious

I reckon go to Alice Springs............its in the middle for everyone. Think of our friends in the WEST. Imagine a convoy heading to Ayres Rock.....................it would be a huge party in the country pubs........................ Canberra seems to be popular pick but what a crap hole! I think meeting in the middle is appropriate for a national meeting..............

But to make a In Between Meeting Place, We have to take in Where is everyone is coming from? Whom will make the Journey?

I think Canberra is a good meeting point given that prob 85% of those attending will be from the East - its a happy medium.

Also, as for this Christmas me and the g/f are taking the Gr8 Ocean Rd to Pt Fairy (we have a place there) and then on to Melb and if time permits were hoping to get up to NSW, was hoping there'd be a cruise or something on around that time to meet up with the brothers and sisters on the east side!

I havent been to canberra for about 10yrs but last time we went up with the whole fam for a wedding about 20 of us stayed in these little holiday home things, I think it was called Logan Village, but I could be way wrong. Also consider when I say I'll def be attending thats actually me + 1 when your working your numbers out.

Hi guys, a national meet sounds great but lets think ahead a bit. We could have a national meet every 2 years and go to somewhere different each time so everyone gets one near home. The Vauxhall club has a rally EVERY YEAR in January and visits each state in turn. I have been to every one for the last 29 years and I have seen heaps of the country and met up with so many people. The guys from WA come over each year and love it. Each state gets a home rally each 5 years. Canberra is a great starting point, perhaps somewhere in SA for the next one. :| :|

Mr T
22nd June 2004, 03:56 PM
How about meet at Dubbo (cause central for all east) and cruise to Alice Springs, how cool would it be to have 200 or so Opels in front of the Rock.

This is the way I see it, your comments are welcome.

Day 1: Meet at Dubbo, stay overnight (costs about $80 per room)
Day 2: Drive to Broken Hill (or Oodnadatta as mentioned before) should be cheap
Day 3: Drive to Alice Springs
Day 4: Drive to Ayres Rock, spend the day there
Day 5: Spend at Ayres Rock
Day 6: Drive to Lake Eyre (or somewhere similar)
Day 7: Drive to Dubbo
Day 8: Go home :D

What do you think?

come on its 2007 and still no national meeting for opelaus

i'm keen for one!

It's a bit of a nightmare to organise...

that's completely understandable... they are a huge thing to do. one of the other car forums i am a part of (not opel related) is organising a national meet up for april this year... looks insane! But will be a great weekend for tehm i'm sure (can't go due to other commitments unforetunately)

The Arse Fell out MY Idea.
No one could make up there minds on where to have it & Getting General Ideas of Atendees from each State, At the time there was only 3 Vics (Me, Degen_Astra & Franky) The Idea was canned.

hmm... if we could get people to agree on a location etc...

Pauly and I have been joking about one lately....would be interested to see how many would go through with it.

i'd go i'd go!!!

sounds interesting, but would need a lot of notice for people, with lots of bumps so people dont forget :).

definately... but if something does end up getting organised, anyway i can help do let me know ;)

I think this is something we should definately look at for 2007/2008.... i'd love to meet the other interstate members of OA!!!! ;)

bumping this in the hope that something may eventuate.
i understand its hard to meet everyones needs with distance to travel etc, but we will all have to make comprimises.
i say canberra or newy, not because i live in a decent proximity, but because they are both towns with the pluses of being close to everything, yet not too populated to the extent of syd or bris or melb.
short of that, i say northern south australia somewhere, being a middle point for everyone nationally.
id like to suggest instead of worrying about accomodation, we could all just camp out in tents. this will save everyone alot of accom money, which would help with fuel cost.
a 3person tent will only set you back $50 for a good one, i know they are available for less.
1 whole week may be too long as mentioned by others, but i think 3 days would probably be best, this would allow for

day 1,
arrival and one night of partying, drinking etc,
day 2,
hold any events that will help get people involved, eg mini show and shine, (id never win lol) or a cruise? best dressed car?
day 3
see the sights of the town we are staying at/near and say our goodbyes in the arvo and return home.

prizes dont have to be material objects, perhaps pauly could step in and award the winners with 1 years free membership/sponsorship thing.
or the winners could have the pride of being able to state in their sig or avatar that they are the 2008 opelaus national show and shine winner.

i know we have a few businesses advertising on here in the buy and sell area, perhaps they could use this meet as a way to push their products, gain a couple of customers, make some dough and in return offer as product as a prize.
and if it happens that no one wants to attend unless there are real prizes perhaps we could all chip in $10--$15--$20 each car for attendance fee to go towards prizes...?
trophies seem to be the prize of choice but i see no harm in say $50 fuel vouchers or something similar. car care products? discounts on products?

im just throwing suggestions around here guys, but 1 thing is for sure,
someone needs to put their foot down and say...
this is the date!,
this is the venue!,
no ifs buts or maybes!
otherwise there will NEVER be a opelaus national meet and the idea will get lost yet again.

yep, late this year mate, i was going to suggest this xmas hols but was worried this might be too soon for people to ask for leave etc,
then thought next xmas, but then this thread/idea would be lost yet again.
alot of people dont get time off during easter so that dumps that idea.
i say sometime after new year, this will almost ensure the meet wont coincide with family get togethers etc.
i know i go back to work on the 10th jan, and id say most others do too.
so probably meet on 3rd.
i dont live in newy or canberra so i dont know any areas where you can camp for free for a free nights and not be bothered by the boys in blue because of noise etc.
id start planning it myself but not being a mod etc i doubt its my place to do it.
preferably id say have it northern s.a so everyone has equal opportunity to attend.
if it is to be in eastern australia i say newcastle or as suggested dubbo. because they are pretty much smack bang in the centre of the 3 states.
if it was in canberra i doubt many qld'ers would join in.
this all really sucks for w.a members though, and i for one dont think they should be left out and if they were to be left out it would be wrong, very wrong!
but if we were to have it at northern s.a/southern n.t, it would mean a huge drive (possibly 2 days each way) and i truly doubt we'd get many members attending.

i was also playing with the idea of 2 or possibly 3 meets happening at the same time,
say one in newcastle for vic/nsw/qld members, and one at somewhere that nt/wa/sa members can agree on.
truth be told, ive got a wall map of aus on the wall right infront of me, and aus is just too big to hold a national meet where everyone can meet together in 1 group without absolutely everyone travelling a huge distance. hence the 2 or 3 groups idea.

just as a experiment, whod be in for a meet if i was to say
date: 3rd jan 2009
venue: erldunda, northern territory, approx 100km north of sa/nt border.
i found this place for accomodation, everything from rooms to camping sites,
http://www.totaltravel.com.au/travel/nt/redcentre/uluruayersrock/accommodation/caravan/desertoaksresort
also has a google map so you can see exactly where it is.
i doubt it would be an exciting place to stay but i was working on the idea of the middle of australia.

just after the new year is an interesting idea, it keeps this open for uni students (of which there are a few) and it is possible that a few people might be able to get off work around this time...

anyone can organise an event, that may be part of the problem as to why things dont happen too often, people don't think they are ok to organise stuff... (being a national meet i may be wrong here however - seeking clarification from a mod)

I also think that you will always get alot more people attending if its hosted somewhere in NSW or canberra, as its closer for ALOT of people. The other point is also NT is quite a trip (and it could be quite warm in january :p)

NT is probably comparable distance for me but I'd be less likely to go out there

i like this idea :).
most people rnt social able enough to take such a long drive for just a meet up, but some form of event would be a goer i think. the main point of a national meet up should prob be less of seeing the sights or cruising, and more on the social, car event, photoshoots, oh and a decent piss up too :D.
as long as my car is on the road at the time (i have a couple of more projects planned for lata) then i'm sure i'll be there.
a central area would be best i think, newy suits qld great, but is prob too far (or atleast a lot further) for vic and sa.
although if you can get on the track even if it is a small sprint track i think it would be worth it.
canberra is about 12hrs from qld se, and (i have no idea) i guess about the same 4-8 hrs from vic??

hmm so newy is about 12-14hrs from vic then?
it seems sydney to canberra would be the most central position, but where?
is there somewhere like that place at newy or goulburn near act/west sydney?
i dont mind a long drive, but as toby said, would prob need a wk for it, otherwise it would be 1 day driving, meet for the 2nd day, then drive home for the 3rd. depending how central this could be done on a long wkend but.
leave early fri morning, arrive early arvo, do all the stuff n head back sun mid morning sort of thing. a long drive isnt so bad with cruise, as for fuel not even a nite on the town worth of drinks ;).

goulburn is approx 1hr north of canberra,
approx 90mins south of bottom of syd (campbelltown)
it takes me just under 6hrs to drive to campbelltown from port macquarie.
and approx 2 and a half hrs to canberra from campbelltown.

im told that brisbane is 6and half hrs to port macquarie.

so bris to goulburn would be 14hrs.

i dropped that newy mgclubs secretary a email, hopefully they reply.
i asked if the public could use their track and what requirements were needed etc.

so far 3rd jan is working good, so im going to set it to that date, if people dont want to travel the day before, they can just travel earlier and that way they will already be at the destination.

Wakefield Park also offers Speed off the Street Days, where road-registered street cars and bikes can run on the circuit for a small fee. Drivers/Riders can learn how their vehicle can really perform, in order to better understand how to control their vehicle on the road.

Just bring yourself and your street car and for just $110 per or your road bike for just $120 per day (week days) you can experience what it's like to Drive/Ride around a race track. Drivers need to wear appropriate attire:

• Approved road use helmet (also available for hire at track)
• Neck-to-wrist-to-ankle clothing protection (could be long sleeve shirt and long pants)
• Closed in shoes (cover ankle to toe)

During the lunch break at some of our Speed off the Street Days, the V8 Challenge cars are available for Drives or Rides to anyone wanting to experience a Drive or Ride in a V8 Racecar.

SPEED OFF THE STREET DAYS

o Drive your own street car $110.00 per day or road bike $120 per day (week days)

good idea, but to me summernats should go back to the old days of just 6s and 8s.
when i think of summernats i instantly think big v8s, huge amounts of smoke, and mega hot chickies!
dont get me wrong, i love my astra and 4s, but when people start taking rotaries etc to the nats, it just fks it all up imho.
also as far as i know, 4s owners always get bagged out at the nats.
but hey, if im down there around that time, ill be way more than happy to meet up with any member/s who wanna meet up.
my missus grew up in act and has told me (and showed me) all about them dirty little speed cam vans, thats my main worry in canberra.

i know all about melbs cam placement mate, i lived in keilor east (near essendon) for almost a year, my fave hidden cam was the one hidden behind the sunshine or st albans turn off sign, just after the turn off but still on the ring rd.... heading towards keilor east.
while we are the topic of that area, shit that bridge just before keilor east turn off is bad on a windy day, blows you all over the bridge!
(just for reference, the bridge was named after some footy player, cant remember his name) pretty big drop to the bottom!
and what you complaining bout? you have that gorgeous Great Ocean Rd. i drove to adelaide from melb, came back via Great Ocean Rd, man that is one very lovely coast.

Great ocean road is pointless now unless you go during the week in the middle of the day - on the weekends the road is full of idiot tourists in rental Camry's doing 50km/h. They've dropped the limit to 80km/h and police patrol it all the time so you can easily get done for speeding - the black spur is a better bet.
