ive just bought a new bike and it came with clipless pedals, however there the clip on one side platform on the other,

do many of u use the clipless style or just stick with platforms?

I must admit im not a fan of the cleats yet, only used them a few times however

whats your opinions on both styles?

I ride plenty!!!

It really depends on what style of riding your doing.
Most DH or free ride guys will tell you to stick with flats for ease of getting off the pedal when things go pear shaped. Flats are good in that respect but I feel dont offer the power or control benefits that clipless pedals do

I couldnt imagine throwing a leg over a bike with out clipping in, I'm just to used to riding SPD's

What sort of riding do you do?

I ride clipless, but will be going for clips soon as I do xc riding and the lack of cleats means that each power stroke requires that I push down with the legs and it's startign to cause injury. Theoretically, you want a smooth cycle motion for xc in which the legs are drawing the pedals up and bringing them down.

im riding xc aswell i bought myself a 07 giant xtc2,

i was riding downhill on a hardtail i guess thats why im so use to flats,

maybe if i buy some better shoes for my cleats it might be benifical, i have heard good things about a few of the new specialised shoes but not sure about the price tag

XTC's are a nice little hardtail.
My last short travel race bike was an NRS, essentialy a dually version of your bike.

I cant rate Specialized shoes highly enough! I have owned several pairs of their shoes and currently have a pair of their "Body Geometry Pro" purchased for around the $300 mark but worth every cent!.

Also I recomend Crank Brothers pedals, your knees will thank you for the extra few degrees of float !

Where abouts do you ride in Brisbane man?

at the moment im getting back into toohey forest, and a few southbank runs im gonna have a look in the old quarry at kruatha (spelling) ive heard that the council is trying to make it legal for use to ride in there, also been talking to a few guys that do daisy hill a bit abotu the posibility of sunday arvo rides,

i live out calamvale so there a few little pockets of bush i can hit round here, but still like the casual street rides for a bit of a mix up

i was really keen on a reign0 but just didnt wnt to stretch the budget that far on a bike im also using to ride to work

Hehe I'm riding a Trek 6500. Cycling is addictive - can't wait for the true summer heat to come around and these lousy cold southerly winds to pass over - fun times to be had. :D

I really should get back out again. My Trek 4400 is a little dusty :(
Daisy Hill has some good tracks up there, check out the pdf here (http://www.mtbdirt.com.au/modules.php?name=Sections&op=viewarticle&artid=12) for the map.

I've wondered about going to clips. I've never used them, so I'm a little hesitant. Might make the change if I can justify a higher end bike, the 4400 is nice, but a lowish end bike in the scheme of things.

once your used to clipins theres no going back. my girlfriend wont use them ive tried to tell her how good they are but its still NO! specialized shoes are ment to be great and could'nt be worse than perlizumi (5 pairs fell apart including a carbon pair worth over $300!)

Get clipped in, My ridings all commuting single track & cross country I have them adjusted quite loose so you can get out in an emergency but if your into extreme cross country, downhill or through woods etc your best with platform pedals to avoid any big offs with your feet still attached (ouch).

My pedals can be used with either clipin shoes or trainers so I'm alright riding anywhere :-)
